A cleaned-up, reorganized compilation of the community wisdom from the OP Forums OP-1 Tips and Tricks thread, originally digested in ratbag98/op1tips. Credits for individual tips belong to the original thread's contributors.

All links below were verified as working in July 2026. Dead links from the original (a lo-fi scratching video, several SoundCloud demos, the LFO Buddy web tool, the OP-1 Patch Randomizer, and a downloadable chord-sample pack) have been removed.

These tips were written for the original OP-1. Nearly all of them work the same on the OP-1 Field, but the Field relaxes several hardware limits — stereo throughout the signal path, longer drum samples, eight swappable tapes instead of one. Parenthetical notes like "12 seconds (20 on the Field)" flag the differences where they matter. For everything new, different, or Field-only — firmware tips, the new engines and effects, a full comparison table, and Field-specific resources — jump to the OP-1 Field section.

03Tape: Recording & Transport

Record without jumping to the tape screen

Pressing Record normally switches the screen to Tape, which is annoying if you want to tweak a synth or effect as you record. Two solutions:

  1. Hold Record, switch to whatever screen you want, then press Play to start recording.
  2. Arm record with Shift+Record. You're now "recording" but the reels are still; switch screens, make your preparations, then hit Play to roll. This is especially useful for re-recording something from the album back to tape roughly in sync: arm record, switch to Album, then hit the main Play and the album-play key simultaneously. (Original OP-1 only — the Field replaces the Album with mixdown files on the output screen.)

Spin the tape by 4 beats

Hold < or > while quickly pressing Play to spin back or forward exactly 4 beats. Do it during playback and it travels a little slower/quicker but keeps everything on the beat. Caveats: it doesn't work well with reverse play (forward play engages before the spin), and it's too awkward to be useful while recording.

Stopping the tape

Nudge and move snippets with the blue encoder

In Tape mode, Shift+blue encoder picks up and moves a tape snippet. Set the loop markers close together for finer scrolling resolution. While a short section is highlighted, turning the encoder with Shift held snaps the snippet left to butt up against the previous snippet with no gap — or moves it freely in the other direction.

Accurate tape divisions

Move to an empty part of the tape, hold the tape-trick repeat key (6), then press Record, Play, Stop. This creates a snippet exactly 1/16 of a bar long that you can lift and drop as a measuring stick for any bar division you need.

A fun use: double up a drum track on two tape tracks, use the 1/16 snippet to offset one of them, then pan them hard left/right for a stereo slap effect. Muting and unmuting the offset track as it plays gives a chop effect that leaves the other tracks alone.

Also: if your tempo is 110 BPM or lower, simply double the tempo to get 1/8-bar grid resolution instead of 1/4 — then Shift+< / > snaps between the finer grid markers.

Tempo maths

Tempos between 80 and 110 can always be doubled or halved within the OP-1's 40–220 BPM range. Uses:

Mellow tape

For a chilled vibe, record a part and then slow the tape down. For extra challenge, record the part faster than needed and slow it to taste. Great for pads recorded early in a song you plan to build on — the slowed version is easier to match notes and chords against.


04Tape: Loops & Editing

Per-track loop lengths for instant arrangement

Cut each track into different segment lengths, and the quantized loop length becomes selectable by simply choosing a track and pressing Shift+Loop. A typical setup:

Select a track, Shift+Loop, and you instantly loop at that track's segment length. Combine with track mutes/solos and Shift+< / > to navigate between looped regions, and you can perform whole arrangements live.

A related trick: keep track 1 unchopped across 4 bars but chop track 2 into four 1-bar segments. Select track 1 + Shift+Loop for the full 4 bars; select track 2 + Shift+Loop to loop just the currently playing bar. Seamless transitions between loop lengths, on the fly.

Live loop-point builds

With a 4-bar loop playing, move the loop start point live — by ear — to the beginning of the 4th bar so it repeats. Add track mutes and some M1/M2 moves (low-pass filter, delay) as a build-up. When you're ready, Shift+Loop restores the full loop from the top. Takes practice, and doesn't suit every beat — but when it works, it really works.

Tape wind without losing the "one"

You can't glitch the tape with the arrow keys while tape-stop is held, but the blue encoder works — so you can wind all around the tape during a tape-stop without worrying about counting beats or landing back on the downbeat. Quick demo.

Tape loops as an instrument

Lift a whole section (up to all 4 tracks) into the buffer and drop it into the Synth sampler. Set portamento to max and play around while holding Shift+arrow up/down on different notes. Hilariously good for unorthodox transitions between song parts.

Off-grid chopping

Record freeform audio (e.g. from the radio) to a tape track, re-record it to another track through the master effects, then chop it while it plays by tapping the Slice key in tempo. Shift+Loop the currently playing snippet to check it loops smoothly, then copy/paste to build your own grid from off-grid material.


05Tape: Bouncing & Stereo Tricks

Bounce four tracks with the drum sampler

Instead of the fiddly resample-with-Ear method: lift all four tracks simultaneously (Shift+Lift) and drop them into the Drum sampler. The tracks merge perfectly, mixer volumes included. Then record from the sampler back to whichever track you want. The Synth sampler works too. The 12-second limit (20 seconds on the Field) is the only constraint, but it beats Ear-overdubbing for track merging.

Manual panning LFO

The OP-1 has no automated pan, but you can fake a left-right auto-pan:

  1. Lift a sound from tape into the Drum sampler.
  2. Add a Tremolo LFO. Set the rate to your desired pan speed, the green parameter to 0, and the white parameter fairly high (around 40).
  3. Record the result to tape.
  4. Flip the white parameter to the same negative value (−40) and record to another track.
  5. Hard-pan the two tracks left and right.

The volume now varies in opposite phase on each side — a proper ping-pong pan.

Dynamic stereo with a random LFO

  1. Create a melody with any sequencer (Endless works well).
  2. Shift+4 to select the Random LFO (others work too), destination set to the envelope/ADSR.
  3. Record the same sequence to two tracks.
  4. Hard-pan them. The random envelope differences make the stereo image bounce all over the place.

Stereo phase on a bass sweep

For a stereo phased drum sound: set Punch as an effect (example values — Punch: 0, Rounds: 24, Power: 70), put a free-running LFO on its blue parameter at a slow speed (amount around 4), and record the loop to two tracks panned mostly left and mostly right. The LFO drifts out of sync between takes — which is exactly what you want; re-record one side until the stereo width is there. Drive around 15, Release 20, EQ clean.

Full stereo mixdown (the "old Tascam" method)

A way to build a true stereo master on tracks 3 and 4 (a workaround for the original's mono tracks — the Field's tape tracks are already stereo, so it doesn't need this):

  1. Record your parts on tracks 1–3; pan and level them exactly as you want (this can't be changed later).
  2. On mixer page 4, kill the left master channel (blue all the way down).
  3. Go to track 4, enable Ear, and bounce tracks 1–3 to it. That's your right-channel track.
  4. Lift track 4 (or park it on empty tape) to empty it again.
  5. Kill the right master (green down, blue back up) and bounce again — that's your left-channel track.
  6. Drop the right-channel bounce onto track 3, hard-pan track 3 right and track 4 left. Soloed together, they should sound identical to step 1.
  7. Tracks 1–2 are now free: record a new part, pan/level it, then overdub it into tracks 3 and 4 one channel at a time (kill left, Ear-overdub right; kill right, Ear-overdub left), muting everything except the new part.
  8. Repeat until the arrangement is done.

Things to watch: check which master EQ/effects are active during each bounce (they'll be printed); compression at the bounce stage will stack with compression at final mix; and nothing printed to the master tracks can be changed afterwards, so this isn't the right method if you plan to fine-tune stems in a DAW later. It takes time — but it gets you real stereo out of a 4-track.

M1 / M2: how they really work

To store a snapshot: hold M1 or M2 while moving a knob on the master mixer or an effect — "memorize" appears; wait until it turns red and the position is saved.

The subtle part: M1 and M2 store differences from the default values, not absolute positions. If Grid's X-Y defaults to (20, 30) and you save (10, 40) in M1, what's stored is (−10, +10). Press both M buttons at once and their differences add together. If M2 stores (+10, −10), pressing both cancels out back to default; if M2 stores (+30, +20), pressing both gives a combined (+20, +30) offset. With some planning this is effectively a third memory slot.

Detune (master tuning)

Shift+Metronome, then the blue and green encoders, detunes the whole OP-1 (OS 14203 and later). Uses:

Multimode filter sweep on D-Synth

The red parameter on D-Synth controls a multimode filter's cutoff and selects which filter type you're in. Recipe:

  1. Dial in a sound you like.
  2. Envelope: medium attack, lots of sustain, generous release.
  3. Value LFO slowly sweeping the red parameter — Speed: Sync 1, Amount: 53, Dest: Synth, P. Dest: red.
  4. Find the sweet spot by adjusting the red knob's initial position and the LFO amount.
  5. Atmosphere via CWO instead of a normal delay — the Sideband lets you detune the echoes. Freq: 20%, Delay: 84, Feedback: 65, Sideband: 4 red bars (use your ears; you want the echoes slightly out of tune).

General OP-1 advice embedded in this tip: twiddle all the knobs, and LFO everything.

Chorus from CWO + Value LFO

A classic chorus is a delay subtly modulated by an LFO. The OP-1's delay is too "delay-ey" for this, but CWO works: Freq 0, Delay 28, Feedback 15, Sideband to taste. Then a Value LFO — Speed 3 clicks right, Amount 5, Dest: FX, P. Dest: green (CWO's delay). Most audible on sustained digital synth sounds; adjust for one-shots and short notes.

Faux delay from the Tremolo LFO

Two flavors:

Tremolo as a hidden extra oscillator

Unlike the other LFOs, Tremolo's rate reaches well into the audio range. Push the blue encoder clockwise past the last marker (hold Shift to fine-tune; doesn't work on drums). Depending on what it modulates and how hard, it can add subtle texture, turn a sound growly or metallic, or effectively run an extra oscillator in the background. It also has its own envelope, so you can build evolving sounds or noisy "kick" transients onto any synth. Perfect when your FX slot is already spent.

The wheel LFO as utility knob

Dial the wheel LFO's type past Synth and FX to the little speaker icon and it becomes a live performance control: green is pitch, the others are amplitude variants, and red adds a kind of distortion. (Sadly the wheel position isn't saved with the patch.)

Two saveable workarounds:

Glitchy sounds

Vocoder (sort of)

  1. Cluster synth: all knobs full counterclockwise, green full clockwise.
  2. Envelope: a plain rectangle (gate-style).
  3. Element LFO with the mic as source, the "note and speaker" icon as destination, modulating the white parameter, amount around 70.
  4. Feed it speech — the radio tuned to a talk station works great.
  5. Play a chord.

Drone recipe

  1. Slow the tempo way down (blue knob on the metronome screen) and the tape speed way down (white knob, same screen).
  2. Pick a synth; long attack and release on the envelope (button 2).
  3. Shift+blue knob for Poly; Shift+green knob for generous portamento.
  4. Enable the sequencer, Shift+sequencer button, blue knob to select Sketch.
  5. Draw your pitches, then Shift+orange knob to set Sketch to Hold so it plays continuously; Shift+green adjusts the division.
  6. CWO or a delay in the synth FX slot, Spring reverb on the master.

If you record to tape you'll need to leave the tape speed low — or record out the line/headphone output to a DAW instead.

Bonus drone discovery: while recording, turn the blue knob left and right. You won't hear anything change during recording, but on playback the tape "accelerations" are printed as pitch dives and rises.

Percussive ambience

Take a kick loop and a bass loop, run them through a light reverb and then Phone: Tone very low, Telematic at 99, then fiddle with Phonic. Eerie.

Pitch bend without accessories

The bend/crank accessories are really just encoder-mapping modifiers, and you can select them without owning the hardware. Learn how they remap the encoders and you can do cool things — at minimum, set the bend amount (white) to 01 for a musical +2-semitone bend, far more useful than the instant octave jump of Shift+arrow.


08LFO Tricks

(Several LFO recipes live in the sections above; these stand alone.)

External audio as an LFO

The Element LFO with the mic icon uses the incoming audio signal as a modulation source — meaning any external gear can become an LFO. Two explanatory videos: the concept demonstrated with Pure Data, and an iPad synth (Waldorf Nave) acting as the LFO.

G-sensor time stretching

Set a sample's playback mode to "play to end" (red knob to the arrow-with-a-line icon), then an Element LFO with G-force as the source, depth −100, destination Synth/Drum, parameter between the green and blue dots. Tilting the OP-1 now varies playback speed and direction — flip it upside down for reverse. There's a sweet spot near the middle with very slow, granular, glitchy playback. Finicky but radical. Reverse-playback "delay" on release

Sampler patch (a piano works nicely), extended release for a bit of tail, reverb in the FX slot. Value LFO: speed at about 3 o'clock, amount 30, destination waveform playback (the faded blue dot). Played legato, you barely hear it — but on key release, the LFO reverses the playback through the release tail, giving a delay-like effect. Adjust the speed to your tempo.

LFO the ADSR

Don't forget the envelope is a valid LFO destination — for instance, modulating the release with an LFO produces movement you'd probably never program deliberately. Randomized patches are a good way to discover combinations like this: browse community patches on op1.fun and reverse-engineer anything that surprises you.


09Drums & Sampling

Building drum kits from multiple sources

Two approaches to combining, say, a kick from one kit with a snare from another:

  1. Layer to tape: enter just the kicks in a sequence and record to tape; then hats (maybe with an LFO) in their own pass; then snares with reverb; and so on. You never need the sounds in one kit.
  2. Build an actual kit: record the individual hits to tape, each with the effects you want, Shift+Slice to join the clips together, then lift and drop into a Drum sampler. There's a good Cuckoo video on this workflow — building things like a distorted bass drum this way is genuinely fun, not a chore.

Add a sound to an existing kit

Classic lift-and-drop doesn't let you append to a kit, but this does: lift the kit and drop it onto tape. Careful — the noisy blip at the start is the kit's metadata; don't touch it. Record your new sounds at the end of the tape section (or cut some sounds you don't need to reclaim sample time), staying under the 12-second kit limit (20 seconds on the Field). Shift+Cut to join the new slices to the rest, then lift and drop back into Drum mode and map the new sounds to keys.

Sample directly onto a key

Hold a key down, then hit drop — the sample lands on that specific key. Demonstrated in Cuckoo's tutorial around 21:22 and 22:24.

Note-repeat via loop mode

In the Drum sampler, set a sample to loop mode and shorten it with the white knob to get a note-repeat effect — and you can do this while a sequence plays. Copy a hi-hat to a second slot, sequence the copy alongside regular hits, then dial the repeat to taste for live hat rolls and tom fills.

Sample into a running sequence

With the Drum sampler running an Endless sequence, you can sample into the patch live — the sequencer switches from the old samples to the new audio as it records. It behaves like a loose granular sampling technique locked to the sequencer's rhythm. Taking it further: feed the sampler's output back into itself via Ear while the sequencer runs. It sort-of beat-repeats, going glitchy and semi-random over time, with great textures — try very short recordings (a second or two) for Raster-Noton-style clicks and cuts.

Focused live drum tweaking

While a drum sequence runs, the synth page's knobs affect every sound currently playing — turn pitch down and both the kick and hat drop. Pressing a note key repitches the whole sequence. But Shift+key selects and focuses a single drum sound, and now the knobs affect only that sound. Mute a single drum live with Shift+red (volume), or tweak one voice while the rest of the kit plays untouched. Works with Pattern and Finger too, with one difference: in Pattern, Shift+note both selects and triggers the sound, which makes tweaking slightly less handy but lets you add hits over the sequence.

The "one weird monosynth" hack

Put several different melodic sounds on DBox keys and sequence all of them onto a single Endless step. You now have a bizarre multi-oscillator, multi-engine monosynth, with each "drum" contributing its own envelope — so you can shape attack layers separately. Dial layers in and out by holding Shift on the sequencer page and pressing keys. Caveats: it consumes the sequencer, drum envelopes are weird, there's no sustain, and DBox is detuned about +60 cents from the other engines (compensate with master tuning if mixing them on one track — Teenage Engineering has said they won't fix this to avoid breaking existing patches).

Sampled chords for non-keyboardists

If chords aren't under your fingers, put them under one finger each:

  1. In a DAW, render each chord you use (the I–VII chords of a major and minor key, plus favorite 7ths, add9s, sus chords) as a separate half-second audio file — 24 chords, one per OP-1 key. Half-second chords means working at 120 BPM.
  2. Map them to a drum kit with the Xfer OP-1 Drum Utility — majors on white keys, minors on black keys, common chords in the central octave, extras on either side.
  3. Import, trim any clicks, save.

Now chord progressions are as easy as playing drums: find combinations, record to tape, add melodies on top.

Deliberate sample distortion

Normally you'd avoid clipping the sampler — but cranking a sample's volume to +24 (Shift+red) produces a genuinely pleasant crunchy digital distortion. It shines on simple material: build a patch by recording a pure FM sine to tape, overdub a couple of detuned copies (add vibrato/tremolo to taste), sample the stack, then crank the volume. Full and thick as bass, cutting and defined as a lead. Effects after it respond differently to the hot level — a delay works well. For extra chaos, add a fast Tremolo LFO on volume for amplitude modulation on top.

Free normalization

Odd but useful: with a sample loaded in Drum mode, just press Lift then Drop. The sample volume increases across your chops (some sort of normalization), while the red volume indicator still reads +0 — so you retain full downward headroom.

Test settings for pitching samples

A useful Phone-effect starting point when repitching material: Phonic (green) 99, Baud (white) 00, Telematic (red) 99, then Shift+blue to adjust the pitch.


10Performance & Live Tricks

Tape-trick transitions and scratches

For lo-fi/instrumental hip-hop transitions, combine the tape-stop, reverse, and stutter keys with rewind/fast-forward:

It takes precision to sound tight, but there's a lot of unexplored territory in these five keys.

Mic scratching

Turntablism with no turntable:

  1. Mic sensitivity to max (+20).
  2. Nitro on the master.
  3. White knob all the way forward; green all the way right.
  4. Rest a finger on the mic and gently rub it. Rubbing speed maps to pitch — faster is higher — and it takes only tiny changes to get expressive movement. Shape the sound with the blue and red encoders.

Be gentle but expressive. Now eat your heart out, DJ Qbert.

Phone-effect scratching

Portamento plus the Phone effect makes convincing scratch articulations: an LFO makes Phone rake across the synth's frequencies while portamento glides them. Set Mono mode, hold one key, quickly press and release another, then release the first — the scratch "shapes" live in the ratio between notes and how long you hold them. Almost any synth source works because Phone dominates the sound. Sketch is great for sequencing trickier scratch patterns.

CWO scratching

The CWO fakes scratching well on organic (non-synthy) sources: frequency and feedback at zero, then work the delay knob while playing simple melodies. It takes several takes, some chopping and rearranging, and a little luck — here's how good it can sound.

Radio fun

Mic soundscapes

Gently blowing on or around the mic, or rubbing it with a finger, through a big reverb (and maybe delay) builds great ambient layers. Flicking the radio on for a half-second at a time into the same reverb adds strange atmospheric punctuation.

Vinyl / SP-303 emulation

To approximate the "vinyl sim" compressor character that J Dilla and Madlib got from the Boss SP-303 — tight, squashed, lo-fi, with drums ducking the beat:

Master limiter as a distortion box

The master limiter's input level behaves unusually: at maximum input it's a clean, maximized hard limit (around 50 drive), but rolling the input level down (blue/green) produces distorted drive — possibly some automatic make-up gain interacting with the reduction. Whatever the mechanism, it's a free distortion flavor.

DIY tape jog wheel

For manual tape recording, a folded strip of card snapped over the knobs makes a surprisingly good finger jog wheel. Photo of the setup.

Violin-style expression

Hold the OP-1 in one hand like a violin and use the Element LFO (G-force source) as an expressive vibrato while playing with the other hand. Works nicely on a Cluster patch. (The original demo video is gone, but the description is all you need.)

One more compact resampling chain worth trying: sample radio noise → pitch the tape down to −24 → drench in reverb → record into the Album (mixdown on the Field) → re-record back as a synth patch → repeat until weird enough.


12Connectivity & Workflow

iPad (USB-C, iOS 13+)

With an iPad Pro on iOS 13 or later, a plain USB-C to mini-USB cable is all you need (USB-C to USB-C for the Field) — no dongle. Put the OP-1 in Disk mode and it appears in the Files app; you can copy files around and even preview tape tracks in place. Extremely handy for moving samples into iOS music apps.

iPad as sound module (older setup)

USB to the iPad (via Camera Connection Kit on older iPads), iPad's headphone jack into the OP-1's line in, OP-1 as the MIDI controller. One gotcha: with the OP-1 in CTRL mode, Tape is disabled, and in normal mode the OP-1 plays its own loaded preset alongside the iPad synth. Fix: load the sampler engine with any preset and turn its gain fully down (Shift+orange on the synth screen). Save that silent patch to a quick slot, and now the OP-1 controls and records the iPad synth (Animoog, Thor, Korg Module, etc.) to tape without doubling. Sequencer apps like Auxy sync perfectly.

Field recorder as a quality mic

A field recorder's line out (e.g. a Zoom H5) into the OP-1's input makes an excellent sampling mic — and it doesn't have to be playing back recordings; the live mic signal can go straight to tape or the sampler.

Organize patches into folders

In Disk mode you can create your own folders inside the synth directory (e.g. a sampler folder) and drop appropriately formatted 6-second AIFF files into them. On reboot they appear under the corresponding engine — an easy way to keep patches organized.

Importing batches of patches

When you copy a batch of AIFF patches into synth/user via Disk mode, give the OP-1 a minute after rebooting to build the patches; they'll appear in the USER bank. Two quirks: after selecting a new user patch, the patch list may appear empty — switch to a different synth engine and back to refresh it. And always check whether effects and LFOs are enabled when auditioning a new patch; a boring sound is often one LFO-toggle away from a keeper. (Sadly the web-based OP-1 Patch Randomizer that inspired this workflow is gone; op1.fun is the best current source of community patches to mine for ideas.)


13OP-1 Field

Everything above was written for the original OP-1; this section covers what's new, different, or Field-only. The Field's three defining upgrades — stereo throughout a 32-bit signal path, a real multi-tape recorder (4 stereo tracks × 8 swappable tapes), and USB-C that makes it a class-compliant audio interface plus USB/Bluetooth MIDI host — drive nearly every tip below.

Current as of firmware 1.7.3 (May 2026). Menus and combos have moved between versions, so check TE's changelog after each update.
